EF2000 IMU

Attitude and Heading Reference Systems

The EF2000 IMU is an inertial Attitude and Heading Reference System relevant to flight safety that was developed for the flight control in the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Product feature

Essential inertial measurement system for the flight control

The IMU is an inertial sensor measurement system composed of gyroscopes and accelerometers to determine measurement data mainly used for the flight control of the aircraft, which is inherent instable by its design.

Hybrid Air-Data

Data Fusion between Inertial- and Air-Data in order to improve signal characteristics for flight control purposes.

Failure-Tolerance and Failure-Detection

Based on a redundant sensor configuration the system is able to autonomously detect and mitigate own sensor failures.

EF2000 IMU Detail

As an inertial measuring unit, the EF2000 IMU measures the movements of the aerodynamically instable Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft continuously and provides this data to the flight controller. In the flight controller, this data is processed in the control laws and is then directed to the aircraft actuators. Through this closed loop control circuit to which the EF2000 IMU contributes continuously, stabilisation of the aircraft is achieved. This facilitates extreme agility and also delivers an exceptionally high level of performance capability to the aircraft up to close to the edge of its flight envelope.

Here are the functions of the EF2000 IMU:

  • Continuous inertial measurement of angular rates and accelerations

  • Autonomous redundancy management with highest reliability

  • Calculation of attitude angles and true heading

  • Autonomous  Self-Alignment (Gyro-Compassing)

  • Calculation of hybrid air data

  • Continuous self-monitoring of all functions with indication to the flight controller

  • Designed for the challenging environmental conditions of military mission scenarios

  • Modular design
